Journey to Yes, 16 : The Economy

The latest in Phantom Power’s Journey to Yes series.  This is the 16th in the series and the second of the Sector episodes, this time dealing with the vital issue of the economy and taxation. This episode is perhaps one of the most important and raises crucial issues for the independence movement.

Richard Murphy is a political economist, author, chartered accountant and one of the world’s leading thinkers on tax and how it can change society. He advises the Trades Union Congress on economics and taxation, and a long-standing member of the Tax Justice Network. Richard is Professor of Practice in International Political Economy at City University.

Just 10 years ago it was difficult to take the idea of Scottish independence seriously. Now Richard sees leaving the UK as the only way for Scotland to reach its full economic and human potential. In this special extended episode Richard discusses the economic forces powering the Yes movement, dismantles the case for GERS and looks at the key issues of currency, investment and taxation that must be addressed to win the independence argument. The prize is a better Scotland.

  2. When you watch this, listen out for the importance of Scotland creating and adopting its own independent currency. We could just wait for someone to give permission – is that what you are waiting for – someone’s permission? YES supporters do not need permission from anyone – they can participate in this project, and it is the YES grass roots who can agree to create and adopt an independent Scottish currency, knowing that is based on the promises they make to each other., not promises made by anyone else – remember the VOW?

Richard Murphy also explains how an independent currency relates in an important way to taxation and investment in the Scottish economy. This project is being built in stages, later stages in this project will include just those items – not as some theory, but in hard practical examples which are under development and discussion as I write. For now I am looking for YES supporters to get in touch – YES supporters who are NOT waiting for permission from anyone to establish Scottish independence! An independent Scottish currency is not only as good a place to start as any, it will prove crucial to Scotland’s future. You can wait for permission – or – the YES movement can start it now!

  3. What a fantastic video and easy to understand, this should be distributed on Every Part of Social Media : WE NEED OUR REVENUE INFORMATION FROM WESTMINSTER NOW BEFORE THEY GET THE CHANCE TO COOK THE BOOKS,

I apologise for the usage of capitals ,but our Westminster lot have form on misinformation and fake news and blatant lies,

    • Aye, the books are undoubtedly already cooked, John.
      Every which way.
However, we need a calm common sense approach to this. How difficult is it to run your own life, and to make your own decisions?
      A fine video.
The money system is largely smoke and mirrors, and a large part of the population gets oppressed by it. Especially in the UK.
An independent Scotland offers hope for a better future. It’s as simple as that.
I don’t want to live in a country (UK) which sells weapons. and perpetuates war and division.
We need a fairer society. Keep striving for this, and it will happen.

      • Nor me either , but my fear is that Westminster, are not even concentrating on their mantra ie SNP, Scotland bad etc etc, they think Rape Clause Ruth has catched her Scots for the time being.
My concern is , when they go full on Ballistic and Nuclear on Scotland and through their biased MSM continually pump out their lies and sh–e some of their crap is going to stick and resonate with the undecided. We need help from the Eu even positive encouragement just to dismiss the lies being spouted from Westminster . We need our fellow countrymen & women to just pause and think and do a modicum of research to find out the facts, then perhaps one by one they may have a moment of clarity a kind of ” Hud on the noo ” moment . Or am I being to optimistic ? . I Sincerely hope not !!

        rant over , john.
